Elaine Valbert
Associate of Science in Criminal Justice – Homeland Security
Elaine Valbert, single parent, full-time dispatcher, full-time student, is looking for a way to make a difference in her community by helping people. She feels an Associate of Science in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Homeland Security through Stonecliffe College Online, an academic division of Colorado Technical University, can put her in a position to do that. "I have had experiences where the criminal justice and court system have helped my family. I want to combine my experience with the knowledge available to me in the Criminal Justice degree program at Stonecliffe College Online because I feel I can put it to use helping others."
When Elaine was taking the first steps in continuing her education, she knew there would be many obstacles to overcome. "I have a 10 year-old son, a 2 year-old daughter and I have to work full-time. Child care is expensive and I value my time with my children, so attending classes at a traditional college nearby is not practical for me. While I am willing to make sacrifices to continue my education, I do not believe my children should." When Elaine started looking into alternatives to traditional schools, she was not familiar with Stonecliffe College Online. "I browsed online universities and Stonecliffe's web site intrigued me when I saw the degree program and all the courses I was looking for. After I applied online, my Admissions Advisor, Nicole, impressed me with swift responses and a wealth of information about the institution and the Criminal Justice program." Elaine immediately enrolled.
Elaine believes a degree through Stonecliffe College Online will enable her to help herself and her children as well. "I want the opportunity to create a more economically stable home for myself and my children. An Associate of Science degree in Criminal Justice can help give me that opportunity by opening a door to career choices.
Elaine began her first class through Stonecliffe College Online in April of 2006 and expects to graduate in September of 2008. "The thing I like most about Stonecliffe College Online is the course structure. Taking courses consecutively, one at a time, can enable me to manage my time and focus my attention better than if I had several running concurrently like I may have at a traditional college." Elaine also feels the faculty and staff at Stonecliffe are very supportive. "I was immediately impressed with the personal attention I received and the professionalism of the faculty and staff.they are great! The technical support staff is very helpful and is available every day, around the clock. My Academic Advisor, Meaghan, stays in contact with me and encourages me to reach my full potential. I am on a first name basis with my instructors, who usually respond to my questions within 24 hours. Stonecliffe College Online is a wonderful experience!"
One of the reasons Elaine chose online learning was because she felt it was a good fit for her lifestyle as a single, working mother. After enrolling through Stonecliffe College Online, Elaine discovered other benefits with online learning. "Online learning through Stonecliffe not only can enable me to spend more time at work and with my children than attending a brick and mortar college may allow, but also is more flexible, practical and personal than I could have imagined. My classes are recorded and are available along with my electronic textbooks anytime, anywhere I have internet access. The constructive criticism and positive feedback I can get, personally, from classmates when I post my work on the discussion boards is really helpful because it can help me improve my work and my grades. I learned skills in my Computer Applications class that can be useful in my workplace now, as well as in my future. But most importantly, I learned that I can do whatever I put my mind to and that is a great feeling. I would recommend Stonecliffe College Online to anyone."
Elaine plans on continuing her education at Colorado Technical University in order to earn a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. "The time management skills, knowledge and confidence I am getting through Stonecliffe College Online may have led me to set my educational goals higher than ever. It can be a great transition to achieving a level of education I never thought possible for myself.
