Shalara Aultman
Associate of Science in Criminal Justice
Shalara Aultman believes in setting goals and achieving those goals. "I am driven by a desire to succeed in everything I do. Failure is unacceptable." Enrolling at Stonecliffe College Online in the Associate of Science in Criminal Justice program has given Shalara the confidence she needs to take that challenge and succeed in achieving her goals.
One of the reasons Shalara enrolled through Stonecliffe College Online is because she feels the staff and faculty provide the guidance she needs in achieving her goals. "When I looked into continuing my education, I wanted to know exactly what I have to do to get where I want to be. My academic advisor, Eric, told me exactly what I have to do to achieve my goals and that is one of the reasons I enrolled at Stonecliffe."
Shalara believes attending Stonecliffe College Online can help her achieve that goal as well as her long term goals. "One of the instructors I had is a police officer. I learned a lot about law enforcement from both the positive and the negative experiences that he shared in class. I learned that good judgment and critical thinking can be very useful in law enforcement and criminal justice. In my courses at Stonecliffe, I am developing the skills and personal qualities I will need in order to be successful in achieving my career goals."
As a single, working mother of two children, ages 6 and 8, Shalara is actively involved in organizations such as the PTA, Cub Scouts, and other educational activities. Shalara's lifestyle leaves little time for pursuing an education without a flexible class schedule. One of the things Shalara likes most about online learning through Stonecliffe College Online is that it is compatible with her busy schedule. "Having classes consecutively, one at a time, works really well for me. I can put all my effort into one class, which requires less time than taking three or four classes simultaneously. I can log on to the virtual campus anytime, anywhere I have internet access. If I miss a live class session I can listen to the recorded archive at my convenience. By attending Stonecliffe College Online I can continue my education and continue everything else that is important to me."
Online learning through Stonecliffe College Online has many advantages for Shalara. "I can lead my children by example. When I get home from work my children and I do our homework together. I can make it our goal to get our work done and I can demonstrate what it means to be responsible by working together with them to achieve our goals. We are learning time management together. I can show them my classes on my computer and they can see my progress in real time. We inspire each other to achieve our goals."
While Shalara feels online learning through Stonecliffe can be very personal, she also feels it provides a setting that enables a more objective assessment of her work. "Because the instructors and my classmates do not see each other, the focus is on the work we submit. I get both compliments and useful constructive criticism from my instructors and classmates that not only can help me achieve my goals, but can also make me a better person."
When, inevitably, questions arise, Shalara feels the staff at Stonecliffe College Online is readily available. "My instructors are very responsive when I have questions, regardless of the subject. When questions arise regarding my assignments I can use e-mail, instant messaging, or even call my instructor at home and I usually get a response within 24 hours. One of my instructors answered a question regarding a situation I had at work and gave me advice that helped me solve a problem with a co-worker. I feel I can inquire about almost anything and get a prompt response that immediately benefits me. Students and instructors can share their experiences and everyone can benefit from that. It is a great experience."
Stonecliffe College Online has helped Shalara take steps towards achieving her educational and career goals. "Stonecliffe motivates me because I feel I am taking the next step in turning my dreams into reality. It is a great college, with great administrative and academic support available to those who choose to use it their advantage.
