Vernon Todd
Associate of Science in Business Administration
At age 41, after working for nine years in a paper mill and 16 years in construction, Vernon Todd asked himself, "What can I do to build a better life for my wife, my children and myself?" The answer for Vernon was to continue his education through Stonecliffe College Online a division of Colorado Technical University.
Like most working adults who have been out of school for a long time, Vernon had apprehensions about continuing his education. "I developed an interest in project management during my work in construction, but I knew I needed at least a Bachelor's degree in order to pursue that career. I wasn't sure continuing my education would be possible at my age, with my work schedule and family responsibilities. Then I spoke with an Admissions Advisor at Colorado Technical University that was knowledgeable, helpful and thorough. She convinced me it was possible to balance school with work and family and motivated me to do it. It's amazing how much one phone call has changed my life."

Vernon is currently pursuing an Associate of Science in Business Administration through Stonecliffe College Online. Despite his apprehensions, he quickly became adept at navigating the state-of-the-art Virtual Campus. "When I started my first class, I felt a little lost, but I soon realized that my instructors are knowledgeable, supportive and readily available to help me succeed. I learned a lot about computers and quickly caught on to online learning. There are many resources at my disposal on the Virtual Campus. The teamwork and the personal interaction with my instructors and fellow students makes me feel very comfortable, but most importantly, it opens my mind and motivates me. Thanks to Stonecliffe College Online I learned how to learn and now I love learning."
Vernon's enthusiasm for learning has paid off in several ways. He earned a spot on the Dean's List and the Chancellor's List. His success has led him to set new goals for himself. After earning his Associate's degree, he plans on continuing on to earn a Bachelor's degree and then, perhaps, even a Master's degree with a concentration in Project Management through Colorado Tech Online. Although a career in project management is his short term goal, his ultimate goal is to start a construction business.
Vernon feels the knowledge and skills he is acquiring through his courses can help him advance in his field and achieve his goals. "My course scenarios are based on real-life problem-solving. I have learned a lot about principles of business, business laws, business math, accounting, fundamentals of management, human resources and computer applications. All of that is applicable to project management or starting a business. I have acquired a broader knowledge base that includes sociology, psychology and economics. I understand people, organizations and society more than ever. I learned enough about personal finance to manage my own retirement account. I believe everything I am learning is applicable in a business setting to some degree."
Vernon feels continuing his education can also help him personally. "I have become a better communicator. Many people around me, including my wife, have been telling me that I seem more confident. I have gained more respect from others and that has changed my life in many ways. I am less dependent on the company I work for and I have more career options than ever. Stonecliffe College Online has given me hope for a better future because now that I have tasted success in courses, I am hungry for more. My advice to anyone thinking of enrolling there is to not think twice about it and just do it. If you love Colorado Technical University as much as I do, it can change your life in very positive ways."
